Jean-Marie Guéhenno Calls for More Observers in Syria
April 19, 2012
Jean-Marie Guéhenno, who is serving as Deputy to the UN-Arab League Joint Special Envoy on Syria, addressed the United Nations Security Council to argue for sending more military observers to observe the cease-fire there. Dr. Guéhenno, also a Saltzman Institute member and the Director of the Center for International Conflict Resolution, was appointed to the position late last month and has since worked with Kofi Annan, the chief mediator in Syria, to ensure the success of the joint UN-Syria mediation. His statement to the Security Council is the latest in a series of arguments for expanding the mission, a move which "would have a potential to change the political dynamics on the ground," according to Dr. Guéhenno.
